Frontier Sessions
Richmond | 26 Feb 2010
What are Frontier Sessions?
As part of our pro-bono effort each year, The Frontier Project hosts what we call Frontier Sessions. We bring together the best minds from the public and private sector to tackle a tough issue facing a city in the US. Everyone benefits: the city receives some good thinking and recommendations and participants get a chance to challenge their thinking around an important issue as well as network with their counterparts from other organizations.
Here’s what we do:
We gather forward thinking people from great organizations and work collaboratively to find a solution to a problem that matters to Richmond. Participants tend to be manager level or above who add a unique perspective to our session, be engaging, collaborative, and who are hungry for a development opportunity. The day is structured, the pace is quick, but participants will have ample time to generate ideas and learn from each other throughout.
A week before the session begins, we will send participants packages and materials to ensure they hit the ground running. Then, we work together for one full day to think through issues and craft some innovative recommendations.
Topic : The Revitalization of Richmond
Detroit. Phoenix. Cleveland. Dallas. Richmond. These cities are no stranger to suburban sprawl and urban decay; the “donut effect” as some scholars call it. As a group, we will develop specific recommendations that identify ways to reinvigorate the city of Richmond. Topics that will be at the forefront of our discussion will include: transportation, safety, housing, urban aesthetics, education, poverty, entertainment, gentrification, dis/incentive options, and environmental factors. One week prior to the event, participants will receive a package of materials to stimulate broad thinking and prepare them for the session.
Cost: $100 per participant
The UR downtown facilities have been provided free of charge. This fee covers two aspects of the session: 1) Costs associated with the program (materials & food), and 2) A donation to a local charity that relates to the issue we are working on (Donation = Fee – Costs). Participants will democratically select a charity to receive the funds on the day of the session.
